Happy Mother’s Day weekend! If you are stopping by to check out my post on the Midway Flower Market that I mentioned on Instagram and at Thursday Favorite Things, I have re-scheduled that post next Friday, 5/17. Things just got a little too busy this weekend with Mother’s Day coming up and the last minute craziness of finishing up our basement makeover for the One Room Challenge which ends tomorrow at 11:00 p.m EST!
I am almost finished editing photos for the Midway Flower Market post, and I can’t wait to share all the beautiful flower inspiration with you. I definitely have spring and summer gardening on my mind, so today I am sharing how I put together a super quick and easy succulent hanging basket for my mom for Mother’s Day. I love how it turned out!
I love making up gift baskets with some sort of theme for my Mom for her birthday and holidays. I had planned on doing a lemon themed gift basket until I saw this cute succulent Bible verse picture at Dollar Tree. My mom loves succulents and Psalm 46:10 is a favorite verse, so I decided to switch gears and make her a succulent hanging basket to go with the little sign.
I always get my small black hanging baskets and hanging basket hanger from Dollar Tree. Last year I made mom a Lovely Lavender Themed Gift Basket With All-Natural Products using the same kind of basket and a coco liner.
Succulents don’t need a lot of soil to thrive, so I began by filling the basket with some styrofoam broken up in chunks and some perlite for good drainage mixed in with just a bit of regular potting soil.
First I added a beautiful trailing sedum. This plant will grow quite quickly and will trail out over the sides of the basket by mid-summer.
I also picked up some classic Hen and chicks. I love that they will come back year after year and lots of “baby chicks” will multiply over the years.
After planting the sedum and hen and chicks I thought the basket still looked a little bare. I dug out some bright green succulents that had wintered over in one of my old pots and used it to fill in some of the bare areas.
Finally, I added a few rocks from our flower bed to cover the rest of the exposed soil and to add interest. The combination of soil, succulents and rocks made the basket a bit too heavy for the plant hanger from Dollar Tree. If you plan to make a similar basket which includes more than a couple of plants or rocks then you will need a sturdier plant hanger. Since my mom already has a few plant hangers I didn’t worry about buying her a sturdier one. She can use the smaller hanger for a little wind chime or garden lantern.
I really love the colors and textures!
I know I say it over and over, but I just love Dollar Tree! Succulents are so low maintenance, but if you want NO maintenance, you could also buy some cute faux succulents at Dollar Tree and use them instead. Just add floral foam instead of soil and cover the top of the foam with moss, then add the succulents of your choice. Hmm, maybe I should make faux succulent hanging basket now!
Even though it was only $1.00, I really like this farmhousey-boho succulent picture. It won’t withstand the elements, but it might be okay on a covered porch. Mom has succulents and houseplants in her kitchen, so I figure she will probably use the picture in her kitchen in a plant vignette.
I gave mom her Mother’s Day succulent hanging basket and picture on Friday since she is going to be out of town on Mother’s Day. She absolutely loved the basket and the picture too!
I hope you enjoyed seeing how I created an easy succulent hanging basket using Dollar Tree supplies and that it has inspired you to make one too! It only took about ten minutes to put together, so if you are looking for a last minute Mother’s Day gift or a quick and easy gift for the succulent lover in your life, you can make one up in no time. You can find the succulents at Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-mart or your local garden center.
If you love all things related to flowers and gardening, don’t forget to stop back by on Monday to read all about the Midway Flower Market in historic Midway, KY. Now I am off to join my husband in frantically trying to finish up the last details on our basement junk room-to-teen bonus room makeover for the One Room Challenge. Wish us good luck!
Thanks for visiting today, and have a beautiful Mother’s Day Weekend!
