For years men have had their own hangout space in the basement, garage or den known as “the man cave” where the guys can hang out without interference. You will find no frilly lace, shabby chic furnishings, girlie antiques or pretty garden style decor in the man cave!

She sheds are envisioned to be a space where women can be themselves without feeling the pressures of everyday life.  She sheds allow women to have a place of quiet or a gathering place for other lady friends to gather and just relax. She sheds are essentially upscale, repurposed gardening sheds.

1. Consider the purpose

When you design your own shed, it’s important to consider the space constraints. Remember that she sheds are essentially just storage sheds that have been transformed to accommodate people inside. So try not to bring a lot of bulky furniture in; instead, think of a primary purpose for your she shed, and only bring in items that will help fulfill that purpose. If you are a gardener for instance, your she shed will basically be a double duty garden shed where you can incorporate your treasures and collectibles in with your gardening tools and supplies.

If you want your she shed to be more of a creative space, you will want to bring in a crafting table and ample storage furniture. And if you don’t plan on bringing a lot of people in, reduce the number of chairs or sofas that you will be placing in your shed.

2. Decorate the Space

A good design tip when turning an ordinary shed into a she shed is to place decorative items around the space. This helps it feel less like a shed and more of an extension of your home. The boho chic decor trend is a pretty popular design choice for she sheds; it offers a bit of clutter without weighing the whole space down.

If you want to liven up your she shed without buying additional decorative items, you may also want to consider relocating a few of your beautiful indoor plants to your she shed. A few well-placed pots and planter boxes will help bring in some much needed life to your new space.

3. Paint It!

One easy way to spruce up an ordinary shed and turn it into a she shed is to give it a pop of color. Normal sheds come in bland, boring colors; in order to transform it into a she shed, you will want to give it a fresh coat of paint.

Choose colors that resonate with you, but also consider colors that won’t weigh the space down. Choosing neutral colors or pastel versions of your favorite color will help you feel more relaxed and at ease in your new she shed. If you have a color in mind but don’t know how to paint a room, you might want to consider hiring a painter to get the job done.

This cottage potting shed takes design cues from the main house, using the same earthy green and white paint colors. Extras like a deck, stone path, and cottage-style mixed planting borders make the backyard shed design feel more like a home than just an outbuilding. Several garden shed decorating ideas, like lace curtains in the windows, a quaint bench, and outdoor art also add homey appeal. If you are planning on building or remodeling a she shed, remember that it should reflect your personality and your interests. How your she shed looks may vary as your needs and interests change over time, so how you design your she shed is entirely up to you.

For about two years I have been collecting vintage garden pots, tools, and pretty salvage pieces for my future she shed. I am hoping to have it built next summer. For now I am “collecting” tons of ideas on Pinterest. We don’t have space for a big she shed, but I think a smaller one can still be charming and useful.
