After a turbulent year, many of us are looking forward to the new year ahead! Even though we just finished up our kitchen renovation before the holidays, my husband and I have discussed some plans for a few more home upgrades later this winter and early spring. Some of the changes are simply a matter of refreshing the decor, while others, like a our bathroom makeover will be a little more extensive. *This post contains affiliate links and/or sponsored content.
In the year ahead I would like to create more of a traditional or transitional look throughout our home. I have been pinning ideas for some changes to our family room to start with. It never hurts to at least gather ideas when it comes to creating the home of your dreams.
Home Improvement Ideas for the New Year
The pandemic sent sales of DIY supplies soaring, with many of us utilizing our time at home to finish off odd jobs and spruce up the decor and garden. From simple, affordable paint jobs to extending our homes to create brand new rooms or heeding the warning signs that updates are necessary, I think we all wanted to create more functional and versatile, homes as we were all spending more time there. If you would like to make some easy changes but don’t know where to start, read on for some simple suggestions.
Home working is a trend that is set to grow, which has prompted a surge in demand for homes in more rural areas and properties with space for an office or studio. If you plan to work from home more frequently, and you don’t want to move, there are ways to make existing rooms more versatile in addition to renovation projects you could consider to make your home more functional.
If you don’t have the budget for new office furniture, shop at thrift stores! You can update an old wooden top to make it look like marble or granite with a self adhesive surface cover. You can buy rolls that look like anything from patterned to marble cheap online or in a store that can transform what a surface looks like. Use these on your kitchen or dressing table, simply peel and stick! Be sure to use a tool to flatten out any air bubbles – it might be worth enlisting someone to help you!
Designating a portion of our family room to become a home office nook is one of my home renovation goals for the new year! Choose a light and neutral new paint color keep you feeling refreshed and productive.
A Healthy Home is a Happy Home
More than ever, we all want our homes to be safe and sanitary! Utilizing advanced air purifiers can help to make our homes healthier places to work, unwind and hang out with friends and family. Decluttering can also help to enhance the aesthetic of your home, reduce stress and lower the risk of dust and debris gathering. If you tend to hoard items, or it has been years since you had a clear out, adopt a methodical approach. Tackle each room, creating piles of stuff you want to keep, throw away, sell or donate. The garage is a great place to start!
While a lot of us turned our focus to our indoor spaces during lockdown and beyond, why not use the new year to make plans on improving things outside your home? Think about hiring a roofing contractor for a roof update, or re-concrete your patio, sidewalks or driveway for great curb appeal. Look into specialist Asphalt Paving Contractors who can help ensure it is done to the best quality. Don’t forget to clean up and declutter the garage too! Investing in storage is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your home tidy and reduce the risk of cluttered spaces.
Another trend, which may continue to gather speed in 2021, is working out at home. If you have a clean garage or mold free basement, you could make space for home gym equipment or create an area for using mats, kettlebells or weights without losing storage space or the option to park your car if you need to.
Use the wall space available to store your supplies, or look into innovative, space-saving solutions like pull-out drawers and modular storage.
Of course home improvement or DIY projects don’t have to take a lot of time or cost a lot of money. Oftentimes, just fresh paint and accessories can completely transform a space in no time.
