Raise your hand if you LOVE decorating with baskets!!!! If you’re here, I already know you do!
Today’s post is full of tons of inspiration for decorating with baskets that you won’t want to miss!
Hello friends and welcome to the Vintage Lifestyle of Love hop hosted by my dear friend Cindy of County Road 407! This month’s theme is one that all vintage lovers will enjoy…BASKETS! Can we ever have too many? Well maybe, but they sure are beautiful and useful, and so fun to thrift!
If you are coming over from Lora Bloomquist’s beautiful post on vintage basket ideas, I know you have already been inspired by her tips and tricks for decorating with vintage baskets. I always love Lora’s vintage collections! You will also find links to all ten fabulous vintage basket posts to explore at the end of this post. *This post contains affiliate links.
I have shared several posts over the years featuring ways to use baskets in decor, but also for useful storage. For today’s post I am focusing on how I am using baskets as decor and storage in my new kitchen, as well as some other favorite ways I have used baskets indoors and out both here at the new house and back at the yellow brick home. It’s also happens to be AMAZON PRIME DAY, so I will be adding in a few affiliate links you might want to check out. Enjoy!
Styled Baskets in the Kitchen-in-Progress
We have lived in our new (1926 RED brick home) for less than a year, and I am just now starting to concentrate on styling the kitchen now that most of the major reno is finishing up. Since we moved in I haven’t been able to figure out how to style the countertop space under the right side kitchen window, until yesterday when I shopped my house for baskets to share for today’s post and then realized my long skinny handled basket would look great in that very spot filled with some vintage and some kitchen goodness. I really just love how Cindy’s Pinterest Challenges and Lifestyle of Love hops really force me to be creative and get in gear!
Thrifted cookbooks, an antique crock filled with vintage cooking utensils, ironstone platters, a blue transferware saucer, old cutting boards and a vintage rolling pin are all items I had scattered around that I hadn’t found great spots for yet, but I really like them all corralled in this thrifted basket vignette.
I am really feeling some grandma-core vibes here, especially with the pretty mugs lining the window sill. My grandma always had some kind of trinkets on the window sill, did yours?
My favorite touch is the realistic faux plant from Michael’s which added a bit of “freshness” to brighten it up with some modern -vintage-cottage farmhouse vibes. Plants and baskets are always a great combo!
By the way, I have to mention how much I love the new cabinet hardware we added to our kitchen cabinets. The hardware really elevated the cabinets! They are so well made and just the prettiest mix of antique gold and copper which could not be more perfect for our kitchen since I am mixing those metals. And since it’s “prime time” to shop on Amazon, here’s the link to check them out!
A brief digression… let’s take a minute to discuss this new kitchen and it’s progress!
If you are new here or if you haven’t been over to visit in a while this may be your first time seeing any photos of our new kitchen which was previously the dining room of our 1926 home and completely built from scratch, starting around this time last year. Even though it is incomplete, I truly love it, especially all the spaciousness and bright light! I haven’t shared much because it has been a sloooow process! As you can see, I still haven’t decided on a backsplash. I just cannot decide, and I have learned not to rush these things or it may turn out to be a costly regret.
Case in point, the quartz island that I got a “really good deal” on, but turned out to be much whiter than what I wanted and I am already saving up to replace it with a more off white quartz next summer…grr! It is a pretty and very useful countertop, but just not what I envisioned. Also, I have been staring at the paint sample on the island for about 2 months, deciding if I want that pop of color there in hopes that it might help with distract me from the island. One simple change that is coming this week that I think will a much needed pop of interest is the addition of some cute toile valances I am making from some beautiful thrifted material. (More about all of this in a post on Friday.)
And now, back to baskets!
On the left side of the kitchen is the oval farmhouse basket tray I have shared many times over the past couple of years and has become a staple in this kitchen corner too. For mid-summer I have styled the basket with a simple lemons and herbs theme. I am a crazy herb lady so I love anything herb related in decor, whether fresh, dried or faux.
I have had most of the items in the basket for years and you if are a friend and reader you will probably recognize them from past vignettes. To make the basket styling feel refreshed, I did dry brush the previously shabby-white vintage mirror with a quick coat of teal blue paint and added a new Ralph Lauren dish towel with a pretty teal and blue vintage design.

Here is a shot of the corner basket from further back in the kitchen I thought you might like to see the simple styled tray on the island that I have been enjoying since the Fourth of July too. I keep out my patriotic decor all through July (including the patriotic porch decor) and in light of recent events, the American flag is my reminder to continually be in prayer for our country.

This same basket was styled this past spring with a flowers and garden theme.
I loved creating a patriotic farmhouse styled basket tray for a pinterest challenge a couple of years ago.
I have sometimes used the basket on my summer porch to serve drinks too.
If you don’t have a handled basket tray, I suggest you get hoppin’ and find one ;)! As you will see, this basket is my most used and versatile basket for decorating!

Since it’s Christmas in July…here’s how I my Christmas styled basket tray from a couple of years ago.
And why not check out this Thanksgiving basket inspo, since Hobby Lobby apparently wants us to believe that fall has arrived! It’s 100 degrees here daily and so humid you can’t go outside, so I beg to differ!
Last September we were barely getting settled in, and we didn’t even have all the cabinets installed, a range hood or many other kitchen necessities, but I did manage to style the basket for early fall! (Priorities…)
Additional Favorite Baskets
Enough of fall… let’s think beachy breezes! This large basket is definitely one of my favorites. I have used it for just about everything.

It is great for storing extra pillows and throws. In this background of this picture you can also see glimpses of two baskets I use to store children’s books or corral odds and ends on the bottom bookcase shelves.
Several hyacinth baskets are used similarly on the bookshelves in the foyer.

Of course baskets are quintessential in small bathrooms where storage space is limited.
This smaller round hyacinth basket tray (similar basket here) has been used over and over in decorating and for daily use. Currently it sits atop our microwave in the pantry and holds fruit or snacks.
A basket of fresh hydrangeas…be still my heart!
A basket of ferns is a tried and true simple summer combo and the easiest summer centerpiece!

Thrifted Baskets for Porch and Garden
Sometimes I find beautiful baskets at estate sales or thrift shops that are just too stinky to bring in my home because they have been stored in basements or garages. As long as the basket doesn’t have a distinct mold smell or visible mold, these thrifted finds often end up as flower baskets on the porch or patio.
I love the simplicity and beauty of just sticking a potted plant down in a basket. I just use plastic bags to protect the basket from water damage.
I have no idea what happened to this cute basket!
Even common laundry baskets can be used for seasonal outdoor displays. These types of deep baskets are staples around my garden work area and I usually just keep one on the fence post. When I am weeding, pruning, or picking up yard debris I carry the basket around with me and throw all the refuse in, then dump it in the trash.
Almost all of my door baskets were stinky thrifty baskets, but they are fine to use on the doors and over time they air out!
I had forgotten all about this basket because I have thrifted it and it got lost in the abyss of our garage during the move. I just found it a couple of weeks ago and decided to use it on our porch because it fell into the stinky basket category.
It’s perfect for the thrifted patio table because it has handles and can easily be moved when we want to prop up our feet.
A Few More of My Favorite Baskets
I picked up another handled basket tray for the living room coffee table and have enjoyed styling it seasonally too.
In the background you can see my faux fiddle leaf fig in a favorite vintage market basket.

A thrifting friend of mine scored the vintage market basket for me for only $5 a few years back.
It is definitely one of my favorites!
My eyes are also always peeled for vintage metal baskets when I’m out junkin’.
I’m still loving tobacco baskets too, especially for use in fall and holiday decorating. My farmhouse Christmas swag basket was featured in the 2018 Christmas Issue of Country Sampler Farmhouse Style.
And lastly, I had to include my favorite green vintage picnic basket, and yes, I STILL love my Longeberger baskets and have several that I use for organization, even though I don’t use them in my primary decorating. They are great for storage and so well made!
I hope this post has given you lots of great ideas on how to decorate with baskets indoors and out! Next you’ll find even more beautiful vintage basket inspo at Dabbling and Decorating as well as via all the links below. Be sure to check them all out!

July 18, 2024 at 6:01 pmOh my golly – you’ve inspired me! I never think to gather and display multiple items in a basket. Especially seasonally! The lemons, the swan, the pilgrims, the platters. Each one is styled beautifully and I can hardly wait to get started. We should do a fun hop where everyone styles one for summer or Autumn! I need to get on that. I adore your style and so glad you shared it with us. pinned like crazy!

I have quite a few baskets tucked away and you have inspired me to go through them. I’m actually in need of two new stair baskets ( with handles) I keep one at the bottom of the stairs and one at the top. It works well for taking things up an down and they look nice too. hugs!
