Summer and baskets just go hand in hand! From picnic baskets, to bicycle baskets, to market baskets or simple baskets full of fresh picked produce, they are just so pretty and useful for the season. If you love baskets as much as I do (and crates too) then you have come to the right place! I have been collecting baskets and crates for years and I love using them in my home for decor and utilitarian purposes. Today I am sharing some ways I have used beautiful baskets in summer decorating and a few thrifted basket makeovers for inspiration.
I am thrilled to be joining several vintage-loving blogging friends as we share ideas for decorating with baskets and crates. A special thank you goes out to our host Cindy of County Road 407 for organizing this fun blog hop! You will find links to each of the lovely participant’s blogs at the end of this post.
I love having a big basket full of fresh flowers on the porch or entryway as a simple way to bring some summer beauty and color into our home.
This medium-sized graywashed basket is one of my favorites. Last year for my Colorful Vintage Cottage Summer Home Tour I filled it to overflowing with two large clearance bouquets of fresh flowers from the grocery store.
I always put flowers in a vase or container with water down in a basket instead of placing the flowers directly in the basket. If the vase is too short, I simply use books to elevate the vase so that the flowers are at the desired level.
This summer I switched out my French farmhouse basket tray for a boho belly basket filled with a large fern for a simple summer centerpiece on our farm table.
I also used the same boho belly basket and fern outside for my Patriotic Patio Tablescape centerpiece. I simply added some American flags, including my DIY Upcycled Chair Spindle Farmhouse American Flags.
I did move the basket back inside, but the fern is out on my front porch now. The live fern really needed to be outside, but I love the look so much that I now I am looking for a realistic faux fern to put in the basket.
Baskets are tucked into every nook and cranny of our home. For my Summer Home Tour with Flowers and Vintage Finds I shared how I filled my French market basket with a big potted lavender plant for early summer.
Last summer I used my French farmhouse graywashed basket tray with a summery vintage vignette as a centerpiece on our farm table.
It is fun to style the basket seasonally with some of my unique vintage finds.
This year I was inspired to use the basket in the living room for the Fourth of July when I participated in a fun patriotic styled baskets Pinterest challenge.
Farmhouse Style Patriotic Styled Basket
I have gotten so much use out of this basket tray, indoors and out. It is also perfect for serving lemonade on the front porch on hot summer days.
I also use various baskets on the porch for flowers and to corral extra outdoor pillows.
A lot of the baskets I keep outdoors are very inexpensive thrifted finds.
This pretty little basket is another great $1 yard sale score. I use it in different ways every season, but I love the blue toile liner for summer.
Basket vignettes are so fun to put together. I usually use flowers, books, dishes, or some other type of interesting Frenchy find like this little bust statue.
Baskets full of flowers and pretty things make my heart sing!
Before I scored my antique China Cabinet last summer, I used a handled basket to display a collection of favorite vintage platters, plates and saucers.
This basket was another very inexpensive yard sale find that I refreshed with paint to give it vintage shabby look.
Antique French graywashed baskets or those with a weathered finish are my favorites, like this one from Hobby Lobby. It is especially cute for summer with a vintage bicycle and flowers graphic.
ORC Week 6 Reveal: 1920’s Powder Room Revival
I always buy baskets with storage in mind. This basket is the perfect size for storing extra toiletries out of the way in our tiny powder room.
This larger graywashed basket with a French graphic label was another Hobby Lobby find from a couple of years ago. It fits perfectly under the vintage side table in our bedroom, but more often it is used in our living room to hold pillows and throws.
It was this basket that inspired me to experiment on a thrifted basket to see if I could come up with a similar graywash “patina.”
I had success with an Easy DIY Gray Wash Paint technique on my first thrifted basket makeover using just a few different paints and waxes from my craft stash.
Since then there is rarely a thrfited basket that can escape my paints! In fact, I just thrifted this basket this past week and I have already given it a French farmhouse makeover.
I love how it turned out! I will be sharing the details about the basket makeover and a few other yard sale makeovers in an upcoming post. Always remember that you don’t have to spend a lot of money on expensive baskets. Baskets of all shapes and sizes are plentiful at yard sales and thrift shops and it is very easy to give them new life with paint.
Today’s hop is also about crates, so I am so excited to have the perfect opportunity to share my latest crate find with you. Isnt this Frostie-Bell vintage root beer crate super cool?
I especially love that it is from an old Kentucky soda company.
I also love the silouette logo and the simple black lettering of the graphic. So vintage-Kentucky-farmhousey!
I have collected vintage soda crates for years. Most of them are used outdoors in my summer decor like this Coca-Cola crate which holds a potted fern. Other crates are used for organizing gardening tools and supplies in the garage.
I have several other styles of crates and baskets in and around my garden, but I think I save those for another post on another day. I also have many, many more baskets that I didn’t have time to share in this post today including some vintage wire baskets and my Longaberger baskets that I still very much love. Here are a few other thrifted basket posts I have shared in the past in case you missed them:
