Hello friends and welcome back for another post in my Interior Decor and Design Series. With the new year on the horizon I am sure we all have some hopes for refreshing certain rooms in our homes. I am wanting to refresh our dining room with a new rug, so I am on the hunt for just right one. If you are also thinking of refreshing your dining room in the new year, here are three easy ways to do just that. *This post contains affiliate links.
Don’t you love the idea of making your dining room a place where you want to spend more time in the coming year? Creating your own gorgeous dining area can be as simple as changing a few pieces of furniture and decor.
1. Mix and Match Seating
Swapping a few matching seats for ones in a different but complementing style can instantly invigorate your dining room. This style lends itself to creating a more curated design and showcases a homeowner’s personality. An easy way to accomplish this effect is by changing out the end chairs. Replacing chairs with a bench, either on one side or both, is another way to spice up your decor without going overboard.
One of the most creative ways of mixing your dining chairs is through the combination of classic and modern chair designs. Consider mixing warm woods with a fun pop of color, or combine painted and stained finishes. Slipcovers or upholstered chairs are great for adding softness to a wood dining set. If you keep all the chairs the same color, you can play with different shapes to create an interesting, eclectic look.
2. Add Statement Lighting
A simple way to spruce up your dining room on a budget is to swap out your basic light fixture for a statement lighting feature. More than just a functional accent, light fixtures in the dining room should make a statement. Whether you opt for a large pendant or ornate chandelier, you will want a piece that feels authentic to your sense of style and aesthetic. Always be cognizant of the quality of light as well. In order to create a more pleasing atmosphere for dining, consider indirect, soft, ambient lighting.
How do you ensure the size or layout of the fixture will work with the room? Consider the overall proportions of the room and the size of your dining table. For example, a larger expansion table may pair well with a row of pendants, while a simple chandelier may be better scaled for a petite round table. Often times, statement lighting is meant to impart style and ambiance, so do not expect your chandelier to be the room’s primary light source.
3. Find the Perfect Rug
A great rug can bring color, texture, warmth, and style to the dining room. An important stylistic and functional accent, dining room rugs add comfort, frame the table, and can also define the room itself. From simple to bold, the colors and shape you choose are up to you and your home’s decorative style. Not only does it anchor the room and provide a nice contrast from the flooring, a spacious rug also protects the floor underneath from scuffs and scratches.
Consider the size of your furniture set when selecting the perfect rug. Too-small rugs can trip up chairs, so err on the side of too big. As a general rule, a dining room rug should have at least 24 inches of extra room on all sides of the dining table.
The shape of the rug matters as well, so consider matching the rug shape to the shape of the table. Round tables look great with round rugs, while rectangular and oval tables work well with rectangular rugs. As you can see in the example above however, it is okay to mix and match shapes as well.
I hope you have found these three design tips to be helpful as you think of ways to refresh your dining room in the new year. Are you thinking of making some design changes or updates? I love hearing from you, dear readers! Thanks for visiting today!
