A beautiful Sunroom has been on my dream home list for many years, and the sunroom at our new home was truly one of the selling points when we were trying to make the decision to move. The picture below is the sunroom in progress, after we had already ripped up the old carpet and started priming the red brick throughout the room.
These pictures were taken with a phone, so they don’t really show the reality of how bright and sunny the room is. After living in a house with dark woodwork and lots of shade for the past eight years, I was definitely ready to go for lighter and brighter interiors.
We really want to make the sunroom a daily use room, but I go back and forth on how we actually will use it. One idea is to have a little office area on one end with a small desk or library table in front of the windows looking out to the front porch.
When the previous homeowners converted a wrap around porch to a sunroom back in the 1960’s, they installed custom bookshelves where windows once were. I think they are a great feature, but I have plans to dress them up a bit more with trim and moldings similar to the photos below.
When I first mentioned we were moving a few months ago, most of my readers were appalled that I would consider leaving our kitchen with the beautiful herrinbone brick floors. I will certainly miss the kitchen and it IS beautiful, but in all honesty I would NEVER have brick floors in the kitchen again. Food is constantly getting smashed down in the grout and crevices in the brick and it has been too hard to clean.
Nevertheless I love the look, so I have decided to install brick in the sunroom! Can you imagine it in this photo? Having the brick floor will help my sadness with leaving the yellow brick home kitchen behind.
I am still deciding between a herringbone and traditional pattern. Either one looks so pretty in a sunroom!
As of now I am going to paint the entire room Alabaster by Sherwin Williams. I am on the look out for an antique solid mantel to place on this wall as a decorative accent, with a large mirror above to reflect the light.
I am thinking that a window seat with storage would be wonderful in this area, since the door is just to the right of the windows. The sunroom will definitely double as a mudroom entry.
I also like the idea of using our farm table in the sunroom in the corner with the window seat. It doesn’t look like it would fit when you look at this picture, but we measured and it would actually fit well and still leave a path to walk to the opposite side of the room where I plan to have a little sitting area.
I am imagining it would look something like this which I am loving. I think it would be a great breakfast area or place for family to play board games. I am not worried too much about a little bit of food getting on the brick floor here, and I can always put a rug under the table. It’s won’t be the same as the kitchen with all the food prep and spills.
A round table might also work, but I haven’t measured.
There are plenty of possibilities for the opposite end of the room, but I will need space- saving furnishings. I am not sure if I want to use indoor/outdoor furniture to really give it that sunroom look, or I am going to style it more traditionally with cozy, traditional English cottage vibes or maybe even a light and airy Pottery Barn look.
Even though the room will start out off white, over time I may change the color. I love green and I think a green sunroom would be fabulous! I want to live with the bright and sunny off white for a while though. I can always use green as an accent color.
Plants and greenery are a must!
We have already covered the acoustic tile ceiling with wood planks. I have been considering a pop of color on the ceiling for fun. What do you think? Yay or nay?
I hope you have enjoyed this first look at our (messy) new sunroom in progress and some of the ideas I have for the space. I will certainly share more sun room inspiration photos in the weeks to come as the room progresses and I get more ideas.
Please do stop back by to check out the progress! Thanks for visiting!
