Outdoor spaces tend to get judged on how they look before anything else, and if you’ve got fresh grass, tidy borders, and a few well-placed and beautiful plants, it’s generally going to look great. But there is something else to consider as well – how safe is it?
The fact is that when things start to get overgrown or overlooked, it’s not just about how it all looks anymore, and you’ll find that it just gets hard to use because walking down a path is awkward, trees could be unsafe, and the areas you used to enjoy can start to be the ones you avoid, which is a shame. With that in mind, here are some simple ways to keep your outdoor space safe and beautiful.
Keeping Things Trimmed
It’s easy to just leave things a bit longer than you really meant to, especially when everything looks mostly fine, but the truth is that hedges, plants, trees, and so on, don’t stay the same because they’re alive, and they’re going to grow – in the end, that means they could become dangerous, or at least get in the way of you being able to enjoy your backyard properly.
If you do some regular trimming, however, that’s going to keep everything in check, and you only have to do enough to keep things from creeping into walkways or blocking light, or whatever else the reason is that it’s not as good as it once was out there. Plus, the longer you leave it, the bigger the job becomes, so it’s worth doing sooner rather than later.
Pay Attention To The Trees
Trees are one of the biggest features in an outdoor space – literally – but strangely enough, they’re also one of the most overlooked when it comes to maintaining them and keeping them safe and looking good. Most of the time they’re fine, of course, but when branches start to get weaker (as they will over time), or if they grow a bit unevenly, they can become a bit of a risk.
If that’s the case, or if you’re worried it could get like that, working with a tree service company can fix the issue quickly for you. They’ll be able to safely and efficiently trim the trees and make them safe again, so you can enjoy the garden how you want to without worrying about falling branches or too much shade, for example.
Keep Paths And Surfaces Clear
We’ve talked about some big things that can cause safety issues, but what about the smaller things? That could be things like leaves building up, moss on the paths and paving making it slippery, uneven slabs on the patio, and so on – it can all cause problems.
If you can clear your surfaces on a regular basis, that’s going to make a massive difference for you, and the best part is that if you do it on a bi-weekly or perhaps monthly basis, it won’t even take very long and you’ll end up with a gorgeous and safe garden all the time as a result.
Install Lighting That Helps
Outdoor lighting can just be decorative, but what’s the point in that? What you really want is something that looks good and works well, and there are plenty of options once you start exploring them a bit more. And if you want your outdoor space to feel safe, then lighting is a must, especially if you want to be able to use it in the evenings.
Soft lighting along paths, near steps, or around entrances (or anywhere where there might be a hazard or a chance of someone falling) makes moving around a lot easier, and it only needs to be bright enough to see where you’re going, so it doesn’t have to be hugely bright and uncomfortable either.
Choose The Right Plants
Some plants look really great… but they need almost constant attention, and if you’ve not got the time for that, they’re just going to get out of control, or they’ll die off, and neither option is a good one if you want a nice garden to spend time in.
The best thing to do is to choose some lower-maintenance options because they’ll help you stay on top of things and it means the space still looks good without needing a lot of upkeep. If that’s the case, you’ll be more likely to spend time outside, which is the point of having a great outdoor space.
Keep Boundaries Clear
Fences, walls, and hedges don’t always get much attention until there’s a problem that urgently has to get fixed, but the fact is they’re really very important when it comes to both safety and security.
That’s why it makes so much sense to check they’re secure and in good condition because it’ll help avoid issues later on, and it keeps the space feeling properly defined and looked after. That might not seem all that important, but it will mean you use the garden more, and enjoy it more when you’re out there, plus you might be more motivated to do more tidying if things are already looking good.
