Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope your day has been filled with LOVE. Yesterday I was taken aback at the crowds of frenzied and frazzled people rushing around doing their last minute Valentine’s Day shopping. It was almost as crazy as Christmas Eve! It made me stop and think about how silly all of the commercialism is, and what God must think about all the spending that goes into a holiday created to show people that we love them on one specific day a year!
I also started thinking about people who don’t have a “Sweet Babboo” (as Sally calls Linus), or elderly people who don’t have children or grandchildren to visit them. I thought about the hurting people who have been broken and betrayed by infidelity, or those who have lost a loved one. These types of situations can make Valentine’s Day truly miserable for certain individuals. How could I share God’s love with them? How could I minister the meaning of true love, God’s perfect love?
With these thoughts in mind, I decided to look up some Bible verses on love. God makes it clear that to know true love, we must love first! Giving love is what true love is, and what Christ did for us. No greater love!
Here are some Bible verses that can be helpful to mediate upon not just today, but every day.
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” ~ Ephesians 4:2-3
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” ~ 1 Peter 4:8
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” ~ 1 John 4:7
“Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” ~ 1 John 4:11
“And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.” ~ 1 John 4:21
“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” ~ Colossians 3:14
“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations” Deuteronomy 7:9
I am going to memorize these seven verses over the next week. I invite you to join me! I know I need to work on opening my heart to give and receive true, love. I pray these verses inspire you!
