Happy March!  I am so excited to kick off this month with a little early spring green decor and craft inspiration! Today I am sharing how to make an easy DIY Moss-Covered Shamrock for only $3.00 using Dollar Tree supplies.

Today I made a moss-covered shamrock using Dollar Tree supplies and I simply love it! I have been wanting to make a moss-covered shamrock ever since I discovered a couple of photos on Pinterest to include in my Farmhouse Style Saint Patrick’s Day Decoring Ideas post.

This cute moss covered shamrock tied up with a burlap bow is such a classic and simple door decor idea for March.

I was especially inspired by this moss-covered shamock in a vintage picture frame.

I so enjoyed making a moss-covered shamrock! I displayed it on a whitewashed tobacco basket inside an antique whitewashed picture frame.  I also created an early spring March vignette with lots of green that makes me so excited for what nature has in store this month!

How to Make A DIY Moss-Covered Shamrock for $3 using Dollar Tree Supplies 

Materials :

• Dollar Tree wood shamrock cut-out 
• Small bag of floral moss
• Hot glue gun/glue sticks (or spray adhesive)
• Green acrylic paint (optional)

When I spotted this wood shamrock cut-out at Dollar Tree last week I immediately knew it would work perfectly for the moss-covered shamrock I have been wanting to make.

I headed straight to the floral supply aisle to pick up some floral moss. I usually keep moss in my craft stash but I wasn’t sure how much it would take to cover the shamrock so I picked up an extra bag just in case. As it turns out, it only took 1/2 of this small bag to cover the shamrock completely.

To keep the unfinished wood from showing through, I quickly painted the shamrock with some mossy green acrylic paint from my stash and let it dry for about 10 minutes. I know that Dollar Tree does carry some acrylic paint but I am not sure if they have green. If not, you can always pick up green acryclic paint for under $1.00 at Joann or Hobby Lobby if you use a coupon. If you can’t find paint, I don’t think painting the shamrock is 100% necessary since it is going to be covered by moss. You will probably just have to use extra moss to fill in any light areas where the wood shows through. 

To cover the shamrock in moss, I added little dabs of hot glue and worked in small sections pressing bunches of moss down into the glue until the entire shamrock was covered. If you use a thick bunch of moss you won’t burn your fingers, but I suggest using a pencil or skewer or something to press the moss down into the glue. As the very end of the project I did burn one of my fingers, so please be careful.

I was concered that the moss would not stay on the shamock but the hot glue worked great.

This is definitely one of the easiest, but messiest Dollar Tree crafts I have tried, as the moss tends to get everywhere. After I would complete a section I would turn the shamrock upside down and shake it to get all the loose moss off and then go back and fill in any gaps where moss was missng. It took about 20-25 minutes to finish, but I was working very slowly so you might be able to get it finsihed quicker.

As soon as I finished the shamrock I was so excited to use it as decor. I fed a very thin piece of twine through the original hole in the top of shamrock to tie it to my whitewashed tobacco basket. I tried out the basket and shamrock as door decor on our kitchen butler door and it looked good there, but I decided to make it the focal point of an early spring March vignette in the dining room instead.

I always decorate with woodsy and forest-themed elements in March, as those seem to be the perfect decor items to transition from winter into early spring. The spring birds are already busy around our home chriping and finding spots for spring nesting. Paperwhites, snowdrops, daffodils and crocus are popping up all around! All  ofthe chippy white  in this vignette could represent the intermittent bits of snow and frost that we will continue to have through early spring.

I am loving my little faux snow drops that I found on the end of season clearance sale at Pottery Barn. I think they are so sweet for early march! For this vignete I tucked them down in a thrifted shabby votive holder.

A mossy nest, deer sheds, ferns and vintage treasures reflect the spring awakening in the forest across the street and spring weekend junk treasures hunts soon to be had. Antique ironstone butterpats and vintage garden items are always on my junk hunting list!

It’s so refreshing to see signs of spring indoors and out. I am ready, and I am sure you are too!

My moss-covered shamrock also looks great on our back patio door, so I think I will make another one just like it later this week. I have a smaller round white tobacco basket that I will use instead of this longer one since I keep it inside. I will share some photos of my second moss-covered shamrock in the round basket once I finish it and it is hanging on the back door.

I hope this easy DIY moss covered shamrock has inspired you to head out to your local Dollar Tree to pick up the moss and shamrock to get started. For an even cheaper alternative you can always cut a shamrock out of cardboard and cover it in moss for indoor use.
