Simple Christmas-to-Winter Decorating Ideas

After Christmas decorating ideas to transition to winter rustic and natural winter decor

source

It’s hard to believe how fast the Christmas season flew by! As I begin packing away the Christmas decor, I am already planning how to transition the decor for the long winter ahead. Taking down the lights always can be a bit depressing, but keeping things white, bright, cozy and calm can create a peaceful and welcoming home ambiance. Here are just a few simple after Christmas decorating ideas.

While you are enjoying the last few days of Christmas decor, look around and see what you can still use during the winter months. Skis, sleds, and snowy themed decor will still work perfectly after Christmas. Natural elements such as pine cones, antlers, greenery or birch logs also make beautiful winter decorative accents, adding lots of interest and texture.

Succulents, moss, or paperwhites in urns and pretty pots can add a bit of life to a room in the winter too.

Ever thought of having a live tree in the house? It's a good idea on so many levels. One of them being you can replant it out in the yard…

Once the Christmas presents are unwrapped, you can still enjoy the beauty and simplicity of a small, evergreen tree in a basket or urn.

Unadorned evergreen trees or wreaths are stunning in their simplicity and can keep things looking lively during the drab winter months.

If your house seems boring and drab after the holidays and you have the after Christmas blues, why not paint an old piece of furniture a new color to brighten things up? Blue, green, and white pieces all look beautiful styled with winter decor. Simply wipe down worn out furniture with odorless mineral spirits and paint it with your choice of chalk paint or milk paint.

Just because Christmas is over doesn’t mean you have to take down all of your wreaths and garlands right away. I will be leaving our gorgeous Balsam Hill Wintry Woods Garland on our banister through January. Removing the bows will make the garland look less festive but the mix of evergreens and pine cones in the garland will still add winter beauty and interest. A gallery wall of mirrors is also a great way to bounce light around the room on those dark and dreary winter days.

You could also create a gallery wall using winter photos. *Style tip: Be sure not to use  too many photos on your gallery wall as they can make the whole room seem cluttered.

What a perfect week to have a Celebration of Winter link party!  Yesterday we had a snow day here in the Northeast and there’s a nice, fresh coating of white snow – just enough to make everything pretty! Right after taking down the Christmas decor, things can look pretty bare.  But, I’m not quite ready …

Christmas signs or chalkboards with song lyrics such as “Let it Snow” or “Baby It’s Cold Outside” can be used after Christmas too.

Even Santas with neutral cloaks can be thought of as “Old Man Winter” or “Father Time” figures allowing you to enjoy them for a while longer after the holidays.

I really love winter decor! Our homes don’t have to feel depressing or boring after Christmas. I am looking forward to creating a peaceful and less cluttered look after several months of seasonal decorating from fall through Christmas.

Hi Amber! I hope you had a lovely holiday. Enjoyed your tips and got some great ideas. It’s so dry here in Denver, no snow, so I will have to bring some winter touches inside. Looking forward to another year of your creative blog. Hugs, Pat

Great post and tips for moving into “winter”. I’m leaving my tree for a bit, until I’m ready to put the rest of the greenery away!

Beautiful ideas for wintertime decorating, Amber! I am working on taking down Christmas but we are still enjoying our tree… Charles comments on it everyday, how much he likes it. (I tried learning how to add ribbon a new way and it’s fresh to us!)

Enjoy your beautiful home, off to read more of your posts,
    Hugs,
    Barb 🙂
