Make Quick and Easy No-Sew Pillow Covers Using Fabric Holiday Drawstring Gift Sacks!
Plaid tidings, my friends! Come have a virtual seat in my cozy nook today! I recently shared several shots of our new and improved kitchen corner nook for my Vintage-Traditional Christmas Home Tour with a focus on our festive new kitchen. Everyone seemed to love the pillows I used, especially the plaid! Today I am sharing a little secret…they aren’t actually pillows!
Well, there are pillows inside, but the plaid covers are actually just oversized draw string holiday gift sacks . Hence, the title of this post “Plaid Gift Sack Christmas Pillow Hack!” Honestly this is my quickest and easiest Christmas decorating hack ever! *This post contains affiliate links. You can use any type of large fabric sack and use old pillows or pillow inserts to fake some new pillows. I purchased the three plaid sacks I used from TJ Maxx a few years ago and have been using them as pillow covers each season since.
How to Make a Quick Pillow Cover from a Fabric Drawstring Gift Sack:
- Open sack
- Stuff a big fluffy pillow down inside (Instead of buying inserts I just used my spring daffodil pillows and a fall pillow)
- Pull the draw string tightly and tuck the strings down in the opening.
- Fold the excess down “envelope style” on the back side.
- Optional: Secure with a large safety pin.
Once the pillow is in place there is really no way to tell a gift sack was used as a makeshift cover. The excess on the back isn’t too bulky and the pillow will sit just fine. Mine have not not come loose with use.
I just love the plaid pillows mixed with black ticking stripe pillow covers, and my new Kentucky Christmas pillow!

Even though I like to change things up year after year, I think the plaid looks so perfect on the window seat benches that I will probably use the “pillow covers” again next year. So cozy!

I couldn’t find the same kind of plaid online, but I did find similar bags in buffalo check and farmhousey-gift bags too. Any of these could work to make cute no-sew pillow covers!

Well friends, that’s about all there is to it when it comes to whipping a pillow cover using a draw string sack! Keep your eyes open for fabric gift sacks on the after-Christmas clearance sales so you can make some for next year too. Of course smaller sacks would be cute to make mini-pillows. I have a few farmhousey burlap drawstring Christmas gift sacks that I am going to use to make smaller ones too.
Have you ever tried this “hack” to make a quick no-sew pillow cover? I love hearing from you, dear readers! Thanks for visiting today!
