Early November Around the House and a Little Christmas Planning

Early November and Thanksgiving Decorating Ideas

Late fall is the time of  year when we focus on gratitude turn our attention to creating a cozy hearth and home for the holidays. For some of us this includes fully celebrating Thanksgiving before Christmas, while others combine the two holidays. Some of you may already be jumping straight into Christmas mode! Regardless of how you prefer to celebrate this time of year, you are sure to find some “Seasonal Saturday” inspiration here today!

Happy November friends! I am so happy to welcome you back for another post in my Seasonal Saturdays series, where a few of my blogging besties and I get together to share ideas relevant to the current season.

Today I am sharing how I am fully embracing November and Thanksgiving, yet making some decorative changes and planning that will make transitioning to Christmas decor much easier. You can also find more beautiful November ideas by checking out the links to my lovely friends’ posts via the link-up at the end of my post.

How to set a lovely, vintage inspired tablescape for Thanksgiving

It’s Almost Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, so it’s still all about late fall at our home. There are turkeys and pheasants roosting here and there around the house, and Santa won’t make an appearance until Thanksgiving evening (after his “real”appearance at the Macy’s parade to usher in the Christmas season!)

A cute vintage pheasant saucer that serves it’s purpose on a little side table in the sun room. Most of the photos in today’s post were just taken with my phone on a gloomy day due to lack of time, but I am excited to take some nice photos with my real camera on a sunny day and share our (mostly finished) sunroom reveal on my holiday home tours!

While I don’t do full Christmas before Thanksgiving, over the past few years I have started adding greenery, wreaths, holiday fruits, and some hints of plaid to make the house looking even more festive for Thanksgiving, and to get a head start on the Christmas decorating. I will be sharing more about how to transition to Christmas while still keeping a fall theme in an upcoming post.

Fall Foyer

In August I shared my Scottish-inspired fall foyer with a Sunflowers, Dahilas and Thistle Arrangement, and I have been loving it so much that I never made any other changes throughout fall.

However, sometimes major style impacts come in the small details. This week I  painted the lamp shades on my piano lamps BLACK and I loved how they turned out! I have been looking everywhere for black shades in the side I need for over a year, but I just couldn’t bring myself to pay $90 a shade, and I feel like I got the same look I wanted without the hefty price tag.

Over on the foyer bookshelf I have already gathered up my red and green vintage books that I will be using when I start styling Christmas vignettes. A few wintry Norfolk Pine and pinecone picks are tucked into my chinoiserie vases for a late fall-winter touch that will easily look more Christmasey with the addition of berries and ribbons.

The green plaid “sash” on the David bust is actually an old Longaberger fabric accent that I recently scored at an antique store for next to nothing, along with the gorgeous gold and dark green antique frame.

Another thrifted find from early fall that I forgot to share is this beautiful teal green vintage chair! I love the details and the fun color!

Instead of a tabletop vignette, I created a little chair vignette with a dough bowl of dried hydrangeas from my garden at the yellow brick home, a fall plaid pillow with touches of teal, and one of my favorite vintage pictures that I always use in fall vignettes. No surface is safe when it comes to seasonal vignette styling!

Living Room

Moving on to the living room, I kept my decor pretty much the same as last fall, because I love it so much and I am honestly tired of senselessly spending money and time trying to outdo myself every year just for blogging purposes.

I do always make a few changes to keep things interesting, such as the addition of this pretty pheasant bowl that I had misplaced since the move here three years ago, but recently found when sorting through holiday decor.

Easy fall mantel with velvet mushroom, pumpkin and vintage brass owls

I keep my chinoiserie jars and brass candlesticks on my mantel year round and add some seasonal accents. This year I simply placed a little orange mushroom, a trio of vintage brass owls and a tiny pumpkin on the left, and a favorite fall picture of my two sons on the right with another mini pumpkin.

It’s a good thing, Thanksgiving is almost here, I just noticed that pumpkin has just about had it’s season!

Early November Kitchen

I decided to keep things simple in the kitchen since our son will be coming home from NY for Thanksgiving and “le chef” will want uncluttered counters to do his thing!

Vintage Turkey platter

When I was sorting through holiday decor that is still disheveled from the move, I also found the large vintage turkey platter, so it is proudly on display on the counter with one of my many vintage turkey planters.

In this shot from the dining room, you can see just a bit of the kitchen from this angle. The turkey tureen on the stove is a beloved Thanksgiving piece and has been making a November appearance for over 20 years. If you are a long time reader, you will probably remember him from Thanksgiving tours of the Yellow Brick Home.

Early November Weekend Plans

I have spent early November organizing Christmas totes and starting to gather up my everyday decor items that I use in Christmas decorating to have them at the ready on the weekend before Thanksgiving when I really start to transition. This weekend will be spent adding evergreen garlands to the mantels and banister, along with doing some holiday deep cleaning and reorganizing.

I am also looking through my Christmas stash to see if I can use more copper and rust accents in my Christmas living room and on the main tree this year, since I really would like to keep my dark rust velvet curtains in the living room for the season instead of switching them out for dark green like I did last year.  The coppery bronze wrapping paper gave me the color inspiration for a slightly different color scheme, but it still will blend in beautifully with my vintage- traditional red, green, gold Christmas.

We can’t forget blue…I love a little bit of  a blue Christmas!

November Saturday Cooking and Crafting

We have been getting a lot of rain and it might even flurry this weekend. Sounds like a great time to bake some of my delicious gluten free pumpkin bread to gobble down in between breaks of cleaning, organizing and decorating.

I will also be giving these corroded brass turkey napkin rings a rub-n-buff-antique brass makeover.

I will be switching the hyacinth napkin rings with for the turkey napkin rings later this week when I change out the vintage Myott’s Bouquet dishes for my turkey dishes and make a few other festive changes to my Thanksgiving Tablescape.

Such smart and rich accent changes you’ve made, Amber! Like you, I found (and am still finding) seasonal and holiday items I packed and stored when we moved ….and it’s been 4 years now! Hard to believe. I look forward to your home tour and your mantra of being tired of trying to outdo yourself. It always looks great, and last year’s look is definitely worth repeating.

You know that I adore all that you do, and this year is no different. The glorious colors, the display of treasures, the thought-provoking ideas – it all looks amazing. I’ve always wanted to showcase some of my vintage serving pieces, but thought they looked odd sitting out there by themselves. Well, now that I’ve seen how fantastic your bowl looks on the cocktail table, I’m going for it! I bet you were excited to find it again. I’m still looking for my two tiny velvet pumpkins from 15 years ago! Thank you for the inspo and letting me join in.

Amber, has it already been three years??! Time is flying! What year is your son in now at his culinary school? I remember your writing about taking him there as he was just beginning his training.

I love how you’ve decorated your home for fall! All the pumkins and gourds on the table and throughout. Very pretty with the plaids and your Scottish girl set on the piano. I always enjoy seeing her each season! Oh, funny quick story: We had one large Cinderella pumpkin which made it all through last winter, stayed indoors through spring and summer, and made it 11 months before it was finally rotting here inside our dining area. Charles found it and took it out to the compost pile when he woke up to a funny smell one morning. 😉

I hope you will think about linking up for Share Your Style this week. It’d be fun to feature one of your holiday posts!

Having fun catching up again. Pinned a bunch!

I will be by to share at the party this holiday season.
