Hello everyone! Are you having any beautiful spring weather yet? This has been the coldest spring I can remember with only a few nice days so far. I am so ready for it to get warm and stay warm! Today was the sun was shining and it was a bit warmer at least, so I couldn’t help but to start dreaming of days spent gardening and the fun of outdoor dining. This got thinking about our outdoor spaces and ideas for a future deck, so I started looking for inspiring deck designs that appeal to me the most. Here are several of my favorites. *This post contains affiliate links.
Right now we only have a small outdoor patio space that needs some serious TLC, and a small back porch deck that is fun to decorate up with some vintage junk, but it is not very functional. Still, building a deck is not a priority this summer, but a girl can dream!
Even a small deck can be big on style! This pretty space is just perfect for those al fresco summer meals!
The deck above is one of my favorite designs, and my husband and I have discussed building something similar, maybe a few years down the road. We love the idea of a pergola and the metal railing.
We have fabulous friends and neighbors on the side of our house where the deck will be, but it is not very private. In this cute Boho Chic outdoor space, I love the simple addition of a privacy wall made with wooden slats in lieu of lattice panels that are traditionally used.
As an alternative to a pergola, a free standing canopy can provide shade. Due to some health issues, I have to be careful of too much time spent in the sun, so these canopies are an attractive and practical solution.
We have also considered building an “island” or free floating deck in the yard. This attractive design has the added bonus of an outdoor kitchen area, perfect for grilling and entertaining.
I think mixing and matching wood stain on the decking boards with paint on the hand rails and metal spindles can be very attractive. I also have always wanted to have built in seating areas on the deck, with planters like the ones shown above, or even alongside the stairs as in the photo below.
If we decided to extend the back porch to make a larger deck, it would probably look similar to this beautiful deck at Savvy Southern Style. A cozy corner of the deck would be perfect for reading a book or enjoying a summer smoothie.
Some of the most inspiring deck designs are ones that continue down to join with hardscaping patio areas, which beautifully blend the entertaining and gardening spaces. With the combination of a brick patio against the dark stained wood, this is probably one of my favorite dream decks.
There are so many resources available for designing decks. Many books have detailed instructions on how to DIY, or you can also check out a home remodeling guide for more ideas, especially if you plan to enclose a deck to make an outdoor room. How is your spring home improvement and decor “to-do” list coming along? Are you checking things off the list, or adding more projects on? Right now we are sprucing up our bedroom, and finishing up a little dining room refresh at the same time, not to mention trying to de-clutter and spring clean along the way! With all that is going on, for now I will just have to continue dreaming of decks!
What projects have you started or finished up this spring? Is a new deck or a deck refresh on the horizon? I love hearing from you!
