Hello friends! Do you spend as much time as I do swooning over beautiful farmhouse kitchens online? I have always loved farmhouse style, (I called it “country” before the “fixer upper” and “farmhouse” craze hit!) Since so much of farmhouse style is based on farm life and food, the kitchen is probably the easiest room in the house to achieve the look.
While many of the farmhouse kitchen elements and accessories overlap with the popular country kitchens of years ago, there are also some modern variations. No matter which farmhouse decor aesthetic you prefer, it is simple to give your kitchen some farmhouse flair. Here are five easy ways to add farmhouse style to a kitchen. *This post contains affiliate links.
1. Use Open Shelving
Hang open shelves in the kitchen to display pottery, cooking utensils, vintage kitchen wares or spices. There are many styles of open shelves to compliment various types of farmhouse style kitchens, from modern farmhouse and industrial, to French Country.
2. Display Farmhouse Kitchen Collectibles And Decorative Accents
Fill those open shelves or create counter top vignettes using farmhouse style finds. Display a collection of old breadboards or corral vintage kitchen utensils in small crocks.
Copper pots, fresh pots of herbs or dried herb bundles reference old world French country farmhouses, while galvanized buckets and cotton stems reflect a more modern farmhouse vibe.

Display fresh or faux fruit in a pretty bowl or chicken wire baskets on the counter or island. ( Avoid using a plastic bowl if possible, and remember that some fruits should be kept in the fridge for freshness).
Ironstone dishes, wire baskets of eggs, resin roosters, vintage cow creamers and fresh flowers give a nostalgic nod to prairie style farmhouses of the past.

There are also lots of ways to use glass storage jars in a farmhouse style kitchen.
Don’t forget cute vintage signage!

3. Install A New Backsplash
Popular choices for a farmhouse kitchen tile backsplash include subway tile, brick tile, and patterned tile. Of course bead board is classic, and shiplap is still all the rage!
You can even use wallpaper to create a faux beadboard backplash.

Black and white patterned tile is currently a hot design trend.

4. Use Vintage or Vintage Style Appliances
Nothing takes a farmhouse style kitchen over the top quite like vintage appliances. You can choose vintage replicas or have an authentic vintage appliance repaired through a reputable appliance repair company.
Smeg appliances are the perfect blend of modern tech and vintage looks.
Sinks are sometimes defined as appliances, and sometimes fixtures, but for today’s post we will group them here with the other appliances. A farmhouse apron sink or vintage cast iron drainboard sink are perfect choices for farmhouse kitchens.
5. Farmhouse Floors
There are many different types of floors that will work in a farmhouse kitchen, but hardwood and tile are two great choices.
Even old wood, vinyl linoleum, ceramic tile, or concrete floors can be painted and stenciled to look like vintage tile.
There are also beautiful laminate flooring options these days. For more kitchen floor ideas, see my post below:

5. Update Lighting With Farmhouse Style Light Fixtures.
Update your outdated kitchen lighting with farmhouse style light fixtures. From flush mount industrial lights to DIY ball mason jar chandeliers, there are so many fun lighting choices today.
Today I have shared five easy ways to add farmhouse style to your kitchen, but there are many others. The great thing about farmhouse style is that it is very versatile and classic. Some of the bolder trends and accessories may come and go, but the underlying “farm” theme is timeless.
How do you incorporate farmhouse style into your kitchen? I love hearing from you!
