Happy winter friends! Yes, winter can be happy when you appreciate the opportunities for slowing down, reflecting on the year ahead and endulging in all things cozy and comforting! I have been nesting around the house during all the snow days we had, and I am particularly loving the winter vibes in our dining room. Today I am excited to be sharing the dining room as part of a Vintage Cottage Weekend with my friend Debra of Common Ground! This post contains affiliate links.
It has taken a whole year of living here in the “new house” to get this dining room to a point where it feels finished so I am really enjoying decorating it for it’s first real winter!
Neutral Winter Dining Room
After Christmas I wanted to transition the dining room to winter without losing all of the magic of and twinkle of lights. I decided to keep a small table top tree in the dining room and greenery on top of the china cabinet and on the farm table as part of the doughbowl centerpiece. I also switched out my snowmen for my big white goose and I love it in that spot.
I removed all of the vintage Shiny Brites and Santas and redecorated the tree with icicles, prisms, vintage crocheted snowflakes and dried whole oranges and orange slices. Forcing paperwhites on the counter top and having some bright citrus at hand helps keeps things cheerful in hopes of spring ahead.
The little card with a vintage image of children playing in the snow was actually a Christmas card from my mom many years ago that I now find some way to use every year in my winter decorating.
The crochted snowflakes on my winter tree inspired me to use an antique handmade tablecloth that has been tucked away in the attic since the move. I think it is just perfect for winter!
I switched out the longer dough bowl I was using at Christmas with my smaller one and filled it with some wintry things. I also swapped out some larger single boxwood ball topiaries with these smaller double mossy ones. I loved my Christmas tablescape with the festive, traditional colors, but I love this calm and simple neutral winter tablescape almost as much.
I brought in woodsy winter texture with the mossy topiaries and jute placemats. Simple touches of blue in the napkins from World Market tie in with my other blues around the house.

I was dreaming of a white winter, and we are getting it here in KY! The dining room is very bright with the snow piled up on the deck and the reflections of white coming in through the patio doors.
I easily transitioned my corner china cabinet by removing any Christmas-ey items. I also switched out my red transferware plates on the plate rack for some pretty brown ones. I am thinking the goose on top is a great place for it to roost all through spring with some different greenery in March. Wait…do ducks and geese “roost?” Oh well, mine does!
I thrifted this Currier and Ives plate back in the fall and saved it for winter instead of using it at Christmas. Frayed light blue velvet ribbon is a winter “scarf” for one of my vintage bust statues.
The lacy pattern on the vintage ironstone looks so sweet with the antique tablecloth.
I am going to bring back my red velvet placemats and mix in, red transferware for Valentine’s Day along with other omantic elements on the table, but for now I am really loving our calm and neutral winter dining room.
Whether I use my large or small dough bowl, I like keeping my flickering candle in a cloche in the center year round, and layering seasonal elements around it.

I can only get a shot across the table on the opposite side of the room using my phone camera, but I really love this view that I don’t think I have shown yet. Looking down the hallway leading to the sunroom and foyer, I am really “feeling” some beautiful vintage looking wallpaper on that wall. What do you think? I am also keeping my eye open for a beautiful antique French door to add interest. That isn’t a priority but if I ever come across “the one” I’ll know.
Another view looking in from the kitchen.
I swapped out my vintage table top Christmas tree for my orchids arrangment elevated on a couple of favorite neutral decorating books and flanked by vintage brass candle holders.
The amazing vintage arched mirror was a thrifted estate sale find from late fall. I think it’s perfect for the little “cubby” in between the cabinets. It was already gold but repainted it with black acrylic paint followed by gold leaf Rub and Buff to make it match the cabinet hardware better. It took such a long time for all the details of the dining room to come together but it is certainly a favorite room now. The unexpected bonus of it being so bright during dreary winter really makes it a room we like to be in.
I hope you enjoyed seeing my winter dining room! It is snowing again today, so my husband and I are enjoying looking out the dining room patio doors and watching the snow fall and the birds in the bird feeder. Looks like we might be snowed in for a couple of days again!
You can also see some of the first photos of our sunroom styled simply for winter in this post.
Looks like my new snow boots will be getting more use this week if we have to go out!
The winter inspo doesn’t stop here! B sure to head over to check out Debra’s beautiful layering technique on her Winter Sideboard too. Debra has the best of all things vintage!
Stay cozy and warm, friends!
