Enjoying Fall in the Garden

Fall Garden Ideas Beautiful fall foliage and outdoor fall garden ideas

Hello and welcome to the Fabulous Fall Garden Tours hosted by Stacy of Bricks ‘n Blooms! If you are coming over from White Arrows Home or if you just happened to stop by today, I am so happy to have you here!

As much as I love cozying up my home indoors for fall, there is no place I would rather be on a perfect fall day than in my garden (as long as there are pumpkins!) While many people think of summer as the height of gardening, I dream of fall flowers, foliage and pumpkins year round. Today I am sharing some of the simple ways I am enjoying fall in the garden this year.

Enjoying Fall in the Garden

This week I put together this simple fall container arrangement in a thrifted planter and I really like how it turned out.

I found this elegant Southern Living copper planter recently for only $6 at a beautiful new consignment shop I just discovered.

I love that the planter is so similar to our copper and metal window boxes to the right side of our porch.

Using clearance plants from Lowes I whipped up a pretty arrangement in no time.

Orange and pink mums, multi-colored pansies and violas, autumn kale, vinca vine and liriope provide vibrant fall colors and lots of texture. After the mums are spent I will remove them along with the lirope which will be planted in the garden. Everything else will last well into December and then I can tweak the arrangement for winter.

I just finished planting it up on Thursday so I haven’t found the perfect spot for it just yet. For now it is just sitting at the bottom of our porch stairs.

I still have a few clearance plants to find spots for, but for now they look cute tucked in this favorite galvanized plant tote waiting by the potting bench in the back yard.

This whole area including my Vintage Sink Turned Potting Bench was just created this summer. One day I will have a she shed, but for now this is where I play around with my vintage-junky chic garden treasures, herbs and flowers.

I easily transitioned the potting bench from summer to fall with the addition of pumpkins and mums.

My vintage lady planter offers a bountiful harvest of mini-pumpkins, and vintage McCoy pots are topped with them too! I have no problem with a little retro kitsch mixed in with my French shabby garden junk!

A few years ago she held an interesting gourd among  a vintage fall garden vingette on the patio table.

A vintage bottle is the vase for an impromptu bouquet of flowers cut from my garden border and a snip from one of our vibrant burning bushes in the front yard.

Last year I used some of the burning bush branches in this beautiful and free November bouquet. I love free fall gifts from nature! Which brings me to my next amazing foraged fall score…Bittersweet!

I had the luckiest day yesterday! As I was styling up the potting sink area for today’s tour, I got the idea to fill the salvaged antique crown molding-turned-planter behind the potting bench with something pretty for fall, but I didn’t have anything on hand.

I simply crossed my street with the intention of cutting a few fall branches from trees, when I noticed some tangled vines with vibrant yellow and orange berries growing out of the old rock wall that lines our street.

Upon closer inspection I couldn’t believe my eyes…BITTERSWEET… growing within steps of my yard! I immediately grabbed my scissors and snipped enough large trailing bittersweet vines to spill out of the of salvaged “planter.” Perfect!

When I came upon the vines, most of the berries were still yellow and the leaves were fresh, so I wasn’t 100% sure it was actually bittersweet at first. However within just a few hours of cutting the branches, the berries and leaves dried up, and I was left with the same kind of bittersweet (for free!) that in the past I have traveled over two hours to buy, paying $12 for just a small bundle! I love decorating with bittersweet!

More Fall Garden Ideas to Enjoy

I love adding bits of fall to the flower beds with a few little pumpkins and gourds tucked among my herbs, succulents and chippy garden treasures.

Autumn kale is one of my favorite plants. This variety has the softest pink center!  Isn’t it so pretty?

This week I created a visual arts assignment for my arts and humanities class incorporating fall leaves. While I was looking for leaves to share with them as a demonstration, I discovered some huge leaves on the school campus. I collected several and brought them home with a specific craft in mind, but I had to share them with you as part of today’s tour first. I love how this leaf still has quite a bit of green (my favorite color!)

Here is another gorgeous leaf placed on top of my galvanized bucket filled with cool toned fall treasures that I shared in “A World of Octobers” blog hop.

This area looks just as fresh and beautiful as it did nearly two weeks ago! The butterfly bush was the inspiration for the colors used for this fall garden diplay at the entry into the backyard cottage garden.

This is my favorite fall garden spot right now! The butterfly bush has still been blooming profusely throughout October and attracting new friends in my fall garden…

This stunning “painted lady” is one of them!

I had to have some dreamy-creamy whites in my fall garden displays!

With gorgeous orange and black markings and it’s arrival to my garden in October, I will always think of painted lady butterflies as “October butterflies” from now on.

Planting fall flowers, displaying harvest fruits among flowers and herbs, gathering free fall foliage, and making new garden friends (like pretty butterflies and talented bloggers sharing lovely fall gardens today) are some of the simple ways I am slowing down a bit and enjoying fall this year!

Beautiful fall garden. Our garden centers this time of year don’t carry pansies. Only spring. Love flowering kale. We have purple or white centers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen pink.

    Enjoy your beautiful garden.
